As the delta variant of the coronavirus in the U.S. has created a surge in cases, housing insecurity has once again concerned residents who are being affected by it.

The city of Gastonia and the Mediation Center of Southern Piedmont have partnered to offer free mediation services to those involved in a landlord-tenant dispute or other conflicts.

“We want our residents to know there are resources available to them if they are having trouble making rent or mortgage payments, and we are working with several agencies that can help,” said Director of Community Services Vincent Wong.

“It is very important for those facing possible eviction to act now before the moratorium ends because in many cases it can take several weeks or months to process requests for assistance.”

The city announced this on Friday, Aug. 6, after The Center for Disease Control issued a limited eviction moratorium to homeowners and renters.

Rent payment assistance will be available for those facing evictions until Sunday, Oct. 3. The Emergency Rental Assistance Program has helped 25% of applicants with $441,000. Currently, they have over $6 million left for those seeking assistance, in 2022 there will be $8.8 million available for the same assistance.

While the moratorium has limitations, there is information that can be helpful to those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city is currently partnering with several agencies that can offer assistance.
