The Gastonia City Council is seeking applicants who are interested in filling the Ward I seat vacated by the resignation of Councilman Robert Kellogg.
WHAT: Application deadline for interested persons to apply for the Ward 1
WHEN: Application deadline is May 22, 2024
WHY: Councilman Robert Kellogg has resigned as Ward I Councilman effective April 30, 2024.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:
Only applicants residing in Ward 1 are eligible to apply for the open seat on City Council.
Ward I City Council Seat Appointment Process
State law requires that City Council appoint a citizen to serve the remainder of Councilman Kellogg’s term representing Ward I, which expires in November 2025. State law also gives the City Council the authority to determine the process by which the appointee is selected. In the regularly scheduled City Council meeting held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, the City Council designated the following process for selecting the replacement for the Ward I City Council seat:
- Under state law, the appointee must be a resident of Ward I and a registered voter (please see map of city council wards here).

- A job description summarizing the responsibilities of City Council Members can be viewed by clicking here.
- Applicants must complete the application and return to the Mayor/City Council’s office by 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2024.
- The application can be downloaded and e-mailed to: Suzanne.Gibbs@gastonianc.gov or mailed to: City Clerk’s Office, P.O. Box 1748, Gastonia, NC 28053-1748. Applicants are also encouraged to include a résumé.
- City Council will select the persons who will be interviewed from the submitted applications. Not everyone who applies may be interviewed.
- Those who move forward to the interview phase of the process will be interviewed during a special meeting of the City Council to be held June 17, 2024 at City Hall. In the event an additional day is required to complete the interviews, another special meeting may be called. Public notices about each meeting will be issued.
