The City of Gastonia’s Electric Division received a 2022 Public Power Award of Excellence from ElectriCities of North Carolina, Inc. at its annual conference held last month. Gastonia is one of 15 North Carolina communities to receive the award, which reflects the public power’s strategic priorities, recognizing exceptional achievement in five categories.

Gastonia’s Electric Division received the Customer-centered Innovation Award, which celebrates public power providers that innovate and invest to better serve their customers and communities. Specifically, the Gastonia Electric Division received the award for its “TRU+E Alerts” texting platform, introduced to customers on May 1, 2023. The platform provides service alerts to water, sewer, and electric customers.

“This is an extraordinary honor for our City and the staff who worked so diligently to bring this service to Two Rivers Utilities (TRU) customers,” said Brian Potocki, Director of Public Utilities for the City of Gastonia. “We are seeing great success with the texting feature and receiving positive comments from our customers.”

How does TRU+E Alerts work?
Customers receive information via text to their phone about water, sewer, and electric service outages at a registered address. The customer also receives information when the service is restored. The service is free and customers can opt-out at any time.
