The City of Gastonia’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department will host a Poverty Simulation on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Erwin Recreation Center located at 913 N. Pryor Street in Gastonia. The simulation aims to provide participants with a glimpse into the daily challenges faced by individuals and families living in poverty. This event is free and open to the public.
“Poverty is a stark reality for many in our community, yet it often remains misunderstood by those who have not experienced it firsthand,” said Cherie Jzar. “We hope participants will gain empathy, understanding, and insight into the complexities of poverty as we join together to create a more inclusive and supportive community for all.”
According to 2022 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 14.2% of people in Gastonia live in poverty and 18% of children under the age of 18 also live in poverty.
