Gastonia’s Parks and Recreation Department has been selected as a host for the Jr. NBA Skills Challenge. The basketball event will be held at the Phillips Community Center Saturday, Feb. 10 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The Jr. NBA Skills Challenge provides young people with the opportunity to showcase their dribbling, shooting and rebounding skills. The competition is open to boys and girls 13-years old and younger, based on the child’s age as of Aug. 31, 2018. Boys and girls compete separately.
Skip Youngblood, assistant athletic supervisor for the City of Gastonia Parks Department, says Saturday’s top three finishers in each age group will advance to the regional championship at Myers Park High School in Charlotte on April 29. Charlotte is one of only eight regional competition sites in the nation, with regional winners to go on to the national finals in June in New York City.
The Phillips Community Center is at 2301 Echo Lane in Gastonia. For additional information about the competition, including rules and advice for athletes, coaches and parents, visit the Jr. NBA Skills Challenge website.
