The City of Gastonia has promoted a six-year employee, Andy Stahr, to serve as assistant recreation director. This and two other promotions are the result of the March 31 retirement of the City’s long-term Parks and Recreation Director, Chuck Dellinger.
Stahr takes the assistant director position previously held by Cam Carpenter, who was promoted in April to be director of Parks and Recreation.
“Andy is very experienced in the many aspects of the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, and we are confident he will do well in his new role,” Carpenter said.
Stahr has more than 15 years of experience in recreation, including programming, maintenance, athletics and community centers. He came to Gastonia as an assistant athletic supervisor in 2012 and most recently served as recreation resource manager.
Stahr graduated from California Polytechnic State University, is a nationally Certified Park and Recreation Professional, and is married with a daughter and son.
The City also reclassified the positions of Janet Taylor and Skip Youngblood, and each is now a recreation manager. Taylor will be over athletics, City swimming pools, playgrounds and the Lineberger Park train. Youngblood will manage basketball, soccer, the Skeet and Trap facility, and the lakefront. Taylor and Youngblood will also help oversee Parks and Recreation’s special events at Easter, Halloween and Christmas.
“The reclassification and promotions will help streamline divisions within the Recreation Department,” Carpenter said. “The changes will improve customer service, programming and accountability.”
