City of Gastonia Receives National Award for Budget Report for 27th Year

The City of Gastonia has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year 2022 budget report. The association describes the award as “the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting,” adding that the award “represents a significant achievement.”
This is the 27th consecutive year that the City has received the award.

“This award means a little more this year, as we redesigned the budget book and GFOA has additional requirements to receive the award. This award also demonstrates our continued commitment to the budgeting process,” said Crystal Certain, the City’s Director of Financial Services.

To receive the budget award an organization must satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. Those guidelines are designed to assess how well a budget report serves as a financial plan, a policy document, an operations guide, and a communications device. The City of Gastonia’s budget report was rated as “proficient” in all four major categories.

More than 1,700 organizations participate in the Budget Awards Program. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.
