The City of Gastonia recognized those who serve on its 15 Citizen Committees at a volunteer committee member appreciation event Jan. 16 at the Gastonia Conference Center. Citizen Committees work in partnership with a variety of programs and services and provide valuable input to City staff. The event recognized volunteers for their hard work and dedication during the past year.
“What people don’t realize is the important role you play behind the scenes to help us,” said Mayor Walker E. Reid, addressing the attendees during the event. “I see a group of concerned citizens who want to make Gastonia a better place to live, work, and play.”

Committee members are appointed by City Council members. Membership and governance varies within each committee.
Committee members have given valuable input to the City during their tenure. For instance, members of the Keep Gastonia Beautiful Board recently discussed the idea of the City of Gastonia becoming a “Bee City,” which resulted in volunteers and City staff working together to draft a proclamation and policy to use more pollinator friendly methods for landscaping and to maintain City owned properties. Becoming a “Bee City” has inspired the City to host an annual Bee City event and provide education outreach to schools and citizens.
